Web design trends changes as new techniques are introduced and browser technology evolve, but there seem to be certain central themes that are somewhat consistent.
Minimalism and Functionalism
Minimalistic web design focuses on content and function, and tones down the use of graphics. The layout is often very structured and design elements like position, size, color, and typology is used to emphasis the content.
A great example of minimalist and functionalist web design is A List Apart which uses limited graphics and color, a simple grid layout, and a slight variation in typology for subtle emphasis.
Retro and Vintage
Vintage and retro web designs are inspired by vintage posters and ads, old signs and stamps, retro typography, and soft age-faded color schemes.
A great example of retro and vintage web design is Klassiker in Acryl which takes advantage of retro font types, vintage references like the VW Beetle, vintage stereotypes, and time-faded colors.
Handmade and Artsy
Artsy and handmade web design includes collages, hand painted, hand drawn, sketched, and handwritten design elements.
Daily Candy is great example of this web design genre.
Collage and Grunge
Grunge and collage are often found together in web design where grungy elements like torn paper edges, splatter, stains, etc. are applied to various elements in a collage, or across them to tie the design together.
A great example of a collage web design is Point of Entry where various elements are put together to mimic a desk top.
Glossy and Polished
Glossy and polished web design is what has commonly been labeled web2.0 design style. It involves simple layout, gradients, rounded corners, reflections, shades, strong colors, and big fonts.
A great example of this web design genre is Barack Obama’s campaign website. It uses bright colors, gradients, shading, simple layout, and big fonts.
